Xiaomi’s own source code just gave away more about its update plans than any official statement has. Of the 112 devices expected to move to Android 17, 108 are already deep into HyperOS 4 testing. Devices still running Android 16, on the other hand, show zero testing activity in that same code.
According to a report by BornCity, that gap is being read as the clearest sign yet that HyperOS 4 won’t reach Android 16 devices, even without Xiaomi confirming it outright.
Which Phones Are Affected, and What They’re Still Owed
Two models with genuine sales volume land on the affected list: the Redmi Note 13 Pro 4G and the POCO X6 5G. Neither is close to the end of its support window. Depending on the device, Xiaomi has committed to security patches through 2028 or 2029. The Redmi A5 4G specifically is guaranteed monthly patches all the way to April 2029.

So this isn’t Xiaomi abandoning these phones. It’s Xiaomi separating “security support” from “feature support” in a way that’s more visible this generation than in past HyperOS releases.
The Technical Reason Behind the Cutoff
HyperOS 4 is built directly on top of Android 17, and its release has already slipped once, moving from an original July target to August, with the official announcement finally landing on August 13. A global stable release is now expected in September or October.
That Android 17 foundation is likely why Android 16 phones are being left behind. Running two separate build paths, one for Android 17 devices and another for everything still on Android 16, adds real engineering cost across a lineup that spans dozens of models and regions. Narrowing that to a single Android baseline makes the update pipeline considerably easier to manage, even if it comes at the expense of some owners’ expectations.
On the feature side, HyperOS 4 looks substantial enough to justify some of that streamlining. It brings a new Liquid Glass interface, Rust-based system apps, deeper AI integration, and a cross-device feature called HyperConnect. Xiaomi is also testing a Privacy Display tool, spotted in beta code by leaker Kacper Skrzypek on August 28, reportedly aimed at devices like the Xiaomi 17 and Redmi K90.
How the Beta Rollout Is Staged
The beta program is unfolding in three separate waves. The first covered the Xiaomi 17 Ultra, 17 Pro Max, and 17, plus the Redmi K90 Pro Max, K90, Pad 8 Pro, and Pad 8. A second wave, running since August 26, added eleven more devices, including the Xiaomi 17 Max, 17T Pro, and several models from the 15 series. A third wave covering eight additional devices is scheduled for September 17.
Running alongside those OS-level updates, Xiaomi has been distributing version 8.2 of its Super XiaoAI assistant since August 28. That update adds a three-finger swipe gesture for pinning codes to Super Island, along with a voice command that adjusts cabin temperature in supported vehicles.
Beta testers have flagged real friction along the way. WeChat lockouts, device heating, and assorted bugs have all been reported, and Xiaomi has logged roughly 40,000 pieces of feedback across the two beta updates released so far. That volume of complaints is a fair signal that this beta isn’t ready for a primary device yet. Waiting for stable release is still the safer call.
A Separate Update Is Rolling Out at the Same Time
Independent of the HyperOS 4 beta, Xiaomi has also started pushing HyperOS 3.3, itself built on Android 17, to the Xiaomi 17 series, with the 15T Pro getting access through the Mi Pilot program. Those update files run between 7.5 and 9.5 gigabytes.
A July 2026 security patch has also gone out separately to 58 devices across the Xiaomi, Redmi, and POCO brands, covering both HyperOS 3 and HyperOS 2 builds. Regional timing still varies within that patch. The Xiaomi 13T, for example, remains on HyperOS 2 in the European Economic Area while it has already moved to HyperOS 3 in Indonesia, a reminder that Xiaomi’s update pace rarely lines up across every market at once.
