Software redesigns don’t usually make headlines on their own, but this one’s worth a mention because of who’s being left out. Xiaomi has rolled out a visual overhaul to its camera app as part of the ongoing HyperOS 4 Beta, syncing the app’s look with the system-wide design language. The catch: the Xiaomi 17 Ultra Leica Edition isn’t getting any of it.
According to a report by XimiTime, citing ITHome, the update brings unified fonts and reworked icons to bring the camera app in line with HyperOS 4’s broader visual identity.
Why the Leica Edition Is Being Skipped
The exclusion isn’t an oversight — it’s deliberate. Xiaomi’s camera product manager, known online as @Bao_小李, explained that the Leica Edition’s camera software is the product of a deep, dedicated collaboration between Xiaomi and Leica specifically. That partnership gives the Leica interface its own distinct design language, one that sits apart from the rest of Xiaomi’s camera app lineup by design, not by accident.

It’s a reminder of how much weight the Leica branding carries for Xiaomi. Rather than folding that software into a standard system-wide refresh, the company appears to be treating it as its own product with its own visual identity — presumably to protect whatever distinctiveness Leica brings to the partnership in the first place.
Where This Fits Into the Bigger HyperOS 4 Rollout
This camera app tweak is a small piece of a much larger rollout. HyperOS 4 Beta testing kicked off in mid-August, initially landing on the Xiaomi 17, 17 Pro, 17 Ultra, Redmi K90 Pro Max, and Xiaomi Pad 8 Pro. That earlier wave also introduced bigger changes, including a new Soft Light Glass UI and a batch of AI-driven features. The beta program is now expanding to cover more phones and tablets, with eligible users able to sign up for testing through the Xiaomi Community platform.
Anyone tracking their own device’s HyperOS 4 eligibility, or wanting to follow the beta more closely, can also do so through the third-party MemeOS Enhancer app.
Why It Matters
On its own, a camera app redesign isn’t going to change anyone’s buying decision. But it does say something about how Xiaomi is approaching HyperOS 4 as a whole — not just shipping new features, but going back and tightening up visual consistency across apps that, until now, may have looked slightly out of step with the rest of the system.
The Leica carve-out is arguably the more interesting detail here. It suggests Xiaomi sees value in keeping that particular software experience separate and protected, even at the cost of consistency with every other device running the same OS. Whether that distinction extends to future Leica-branded models, or whether it’s specific to the 17 Ultra’s current software, isn’t clear yet — but it’s a pattern worth watching as HyperOS 4 moves from beta toward a wider release.
