A short Weibo post is the entire basis for the newest Xiaomi 18 rumor making the rounds, and it’s worth being upfront about that before getting into what it actually claims. The post says Xiaomi has started a project internally referred to as a “3D vision frameless screen,” and suggests it could show up on the Xiaomi 18 series next year, according to a report from Gizchina. No other source has backed this up yet, so treat it as a single, unverified leak rather than anything close to confirmed.
What’s Actually Confirmed, Separate From This Rumor
It helps to separate what’s solid from what’s speculation here, because the Xiaomi 18 series itself is very real even if this specific screen claim isn’t. Xiaomi has already confirmed the 18 Pro and Pro Max, built around a new 2nm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 platform, dual 200MP Leica cameras, and a global launch that ends a three year stretch where Xiaomi kept its Pro-tier phones exclusive to China. The standard, non-Pro Xiaomi 18 is expected to follow later, likely in December based on certification filings and tipster leaks.

So the phone this rumor is attached to exists and has a solid track record of confirmed details. The 3D screen specifically does not, at least not yet.
What “3D Vision” Would Actually Mean
If the term is accurate, it likely points toward naked eye 3D display technology, meaning a screen that creates a sense of depth without requiring special glasses. These displays typically work by sending slightly different images to each eye, tricking the brain into perceiving depth the same way normal stereoscopic vision does.
This isn’t a fringe idea in China’s display industry either. Chinese manufacturers have been pouring money into naked eye 3D tech for a while now, and one industry estimate pegs the category at roughly 40 million unit shipments in China by 2027, worth close to $12 billion. That’s a meaningful market, so it’s not unreasonable that Xiaomi would be experimenting in this space somewhere internally.
Why This Technology Has a Rocky History
The catch is that naked eye 3D displays have a mixed track record on phones specifically. Earlier attempts at this technology caused real eye strain during extended use, and the 3D effect itself tended to only work within a narrow viewing angle, meaning you had to hold the phone at a fairly specific distance and position for it to look right. Move slightly off that sweet spot and the effect would break down or just look blurry.
Newer approaches claim to have solved some of these problems, but none have been proven to actually work well on a screen as small as a phone’s. That’s a meaningfully harder engineering problem than pulling off the same trick on a larger display, like a TV or monitor, where there’s more room to work with.
Reading This Leak With the Right Amount of Caution
Given all of that, there are a few ways this could play out. It might describe a genuine internal Xiaomi project that eventually ships on a real product. It could also just as easily be an early prototype or internal test that quietly gets shelved, which happens constantly in smartphone R&D and rarely gets reported publicly when it does.
For now, the only thing that’s actually solid is that Xiaomi itself hasn’t said anything about a 3D screen. Everything beyond that is speculation built on top of one short social media post, paired with genuinely confirmed facts about the broader Xiaomi 18 lineup. Worth keeping an eye on, but not something to expect with any real confidence until Xiaomi or a more established leaker weighs in.
