Xiaomi has stopped teasing and started confirming. The company will officially unveil the Xiaomi 18 Pro and Xiaomi 18 Pro Max on September 23 at 7 PM China time, according to a report from Gizmochina. It’s the follow-through on an announcement Xiaomi made earlier this month, when it first confirmed the series would arrive sometime in September.
Alongside the launch date, Xiaomi dropped a teaser poster carrying the tagline “Full Upgrade” and spelling out five headline features both phones will share. That’s the interesting part: the Pro and Pro Max aren’t just similarly named, they’re built on identical hardware for chip, cameras, and display. The one place they diverge is battery size.
A 2nm Chip Nobody’s Naming Yet
Xiaomi says both phones run on a new 2nm flagship platform, built using a 2nm GAA (gate-all-around) manufacturing process — a more efficient transistor design than older chips use. The company is promising gains in both raw performance and power efficiency, but it’s staying quiet on what the chip is actually called.
That silence probably won’t last long. It’s widely expected to be the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6, and the timing lines up: Xiaomi’s launch event falls right in the middle of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Summit, which runs from September 22 to 24. If Qualcomm formally reveals the chip at its own event, Xiaomi’s silence on the name won’t matter for long.
Dual 200MP Leica Cameras
The camera setup pairs two 200-megapixel sensors — a large main sensor and a large-sensor periscope telephoto — in what Xiaomi is calling its most advanced Leica system yet on a numbered flagship series. That’s a meaningful claim given how much emphasis Xiaomi has put on its Leica partnership across recent generations.
Leaked real-world photos from tipster Digital Chat Station had pointed to a focal range stretching from 17mm to 75mm with 3.2x periscope zoom, though Xiaomi itself hasn’t confirmed those numbers yet. Worth treating that detail as unconfirmed until Xiaomi says so directly.
Thinner Bezels, New Display Tech
On the screen side, Xiaomi is introducing what it calls a new-generation Super Pixel panel, paired with an M11 light-emitting system and a new green light-emitting material — technology the company says boosts brightness while cutting power draw. Xiaomi also managed to shrink the bezels down to just 0.99mm using a new screen packaging process, which should make for a more edge-to-edge look than the outgoing 17 Pro.
Bigger Batteries, Same New Battery Tech
Both phones use Xiaomi’s GSR VIII battery technology, built with 32% silicon content — a higher silicon ratio generally allows for more capacity without a bulkier cell. The split comes down to size: the standard 18 Pro packs a 7,000mAh battery, while the 18 Pro Max steps up to a substantial 8,500mAh.
Charging speed wasn’t part of the teaser poster, but it’s not exactly a mystery. A 3C safety certification that surfaced back in August already pointed to 100W wired charging for two Xiaomi models believed to belong to this same series.
The Bigger Picture
What stands out here isn’t any single spec — it’s that Xiaomi is running the Pro and Pro Max as true siblings rather than differentiating them the way many brands split their flagship tiers. Keeping the chip, camera, and display identical across both models, and reserving the differentiation for battery size alone, suggests Xiaomi wants the Pro Max positioned purely as a bigger-battery variant rather than a separate premium step up.
With the launch just days away and Qualcomm’s own summit running in parallel, expect the chip name — and probably pricing — to firm up fast. For now, the September 23 event is the one to watch.
