Xiaomi 18 Fold to Be First Phone With CXMT’s New LPDDR6 Memory

A Memory Chip Announcement Just Confirmed Another Xiaomi 18 Fold Detail

Component suppliers don’t usually make headlines on their own, but this one comes with a genuine first. Chinese memory maker CXMT has confirmed, through its own Weibo account, that its new LPDDR6 memory has entered mass production — and that the Xiaomi 18 Fold will be the first smartphone to ship with it.

According to a report by Notebookcheck, Xiaomi founder Lei Jun backed up the announcement on his own Weibo account shortly after, confirming the partnership directly. The Xiaomi 18 Fold will pair CXMT’s LPDDR6 modules with the company’s new Xring O3 chip when it launches in September — a chip Xiaomi itself unveiled just days earlier as its current flagship silicon.

Not Just a Phone Thing

The Xiaomi 18 Fold won’t be carrying this combination alone. The Xiaomi Pad 9 Pro Max is also expected to launch running the same Xring O3 and LPDDR6 pairing, extending the debut beyond phones into Xiaomi’s tablet lineup as well.

Beyond the memory news, earlier leaks have already sketched out a partial spec sheet for the Fold: a 6,000mAh battery with wireless charging, a 200-megapixel main camera, and a 7.6-inch display. More details are expected to surface as the September launch approaches.

What Actually Makes LPDDR6 Worth Talking About

It’s easy to skim past a memory-generation upgrade, but the numbers here are a real jump. LPDDR6 succeeds LPDDR5/LPDDR5X with a wider 24-bit interface and considerably higher bandwidth, which matters most for bandwidth-hungry workloads like on-device AI processing and integrated graphics rendering — exactly the kind of tasks flagship phones are increasingly built around.

CXMT’s specific implementation runs at 10,667 MT/s alongside the Xring O3, with headroom to reach up to 12,800 MT/s. The full LPDDR6 standard itself tops out at 14,400 MT/s, so CXMT’s current modules aren’t squeezing every bit of performance the spec allows, though there’s clearly room to push further as the technology matures.

A Different Path Than Qualcomm’s Approach

Qualcomm’s upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 is also expected to support LPDDR6, but reportedly through memory sourced from SK Hynix, Samsung, or Micron rather than a Chinese supplier. That split is worth noting on its own — it points to two separate supply chains converging on the same next-generation memory standard around the same time, rather than one clearly leading the other.

There’s a manufacturing wrinkle worth mentioning, too. The Xring O3 is built on TSMC’s 3nm process, while Qualcomm’s rival chip is said to use TSMC’s newer N2P node — putting Xiaomi’s chip a generation behind on raw manufacturing process, even as it debuts alongside genuinely cutting-edge memory technology. That’s an interesting contradiction: newer memory paired with a comparatively older manufacturing node, which suggests Xiaomi is picking its technical wins selectively rather than chasing the newest number across every spec.

Whether that trade-off shows up in any meaningful way for everyday users remains to be seen — memory bandwidth and chip process node improvements often matter more in benchmarks than in how a phone actually feels to use day to day. With the Xiaomi 18 Fold’s full launch just weeks away, that answer shouldn’t be far off.
