Bought into the hype around the Xiaomi 18 Pro’s massive Chinese battery specs? Buyers outside China should temper their expectations. A new leak indicates the international versions of the Xiaomi 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max will ship with noticeably smaller batteries than the models Xiaomi just launched domestically, according to a report from Sportskeeda.
The claim traces back to tipster Kacper Skrzypek, who says the reduced capacities turned up in HyperOS firmware code — meaning these numbers aren’t officially confirmed by Xiaomi yet, but code-level leaks like this have a strong track record of matching final specs.
The Numbers, Side by Side
In China, the Xiaomi 18 Pro launched with a 7,000mAh battery and the 18 Pro Max with 8,500mAh. According to the leaked firmware entries, the global Xiaomi 18 Pro (model number 2609BPN61G) drops to 6,000mAh — a reduction of roughly 14%. The global 18 Pro Max (2611FPNFAG) takes a bigger hit, falling to 7,050mAh, a cut of about 17% from its Chinese counterpart.
There’s a small silver lining buried in those numbers: even after the reduction, the global Pro Max’s 7,050mAh cell would still edge out the China-market standard 18 Pro’s 7,000mAh battery. So it’s not all downside for anyone upgrading from an older device.
Charging speed appears to be where Xiaomi is holding steady. The leak suggests wired charging stays close to the Chinese specification, though Xiaomi hasn’t confirmed international charging numbers either.
Why Xiaomi Keeps Doing This
This isn’t a new pattern, and it isn’t unique to Xiaomi. The most commonly cited reason is regulatory: international transport rules for lithium-ion batteries, particularly across Europe, cap the energy capacity permitted in a single cell. Manufacturers can work around that limit by splitting a battery into two smaller cells wired together, but that approach adds thickness, weight, and design complexity — trade-offs most companies would rather avoid on a flagship phone.
Xiaomi has followed this exact playbook before. The Xiaomi 17 shipped in China with a 7,000mAh battery but launched globally with 6,330mAh, a roughly 10% cut. The Xiaomi 17 Ultra saw a similar drop, from 6,800mAh domestically down to 6,000mAh internationally. Seen against that history, this leak isn’t surprising — it’s consistent with how Xiaomi has handled every recent flagship generation.
What This Actually Means for Buyers
A 14-17% smaller battery doesn’t necessarily translate one-to-one into shorter battery life, since actual endurance also depends on chip efficiency, screen power draw, and software optimization — all of which Xiaomi has been upgrading alongside the battery on this generation. Still, all else being equal, a smaller cell is a smaller cell, and buyers who were planning around the eye-catching Chinese specs should recalibrate expectations for whatever unit actually lands in their region.
Xiaomi has confirmed a global launch of the 18 Pro series is coming later this year, but the company hasn’t announced a release date, pricing, or which markets will get it. Until Xiaomi puts out an official global spec sheet, treat these battery figures as a strong likelihood rather than a certainty.
